Whether you love to fish for tarpon, or have always wanted to, you probably are familiar with Southwest Florida Tarpon fishing. If “Boca Grande and May / June” have visions of silver dancing in your head, there is something you should know! The opportunities to catch this world renown trophy fish are more numerous than ya might think. Most people don’t realize but some of our best tarpon fishing is actually July, August, September and even October in Pine Island and off the beaches. Read on to find out how YOU can enjoy Southwest Florida Tarpon fishing to its fullest!

Tarpon are one of the most sought after trophy fish in the world. Fisherman travel to Southwest Florida from all around the world for a chance at fighting and landing the mighty Silver King. Leaping like a lightning bolt from below, these fish put on one of the best aerial shows that there is to be seen! This is the ultimate angling rush!

There are a variety of locations throughout our Southwest Florida fishery where we can target these fish depending on the time of year.  From the first tarpon showing up, we primarily catch them off the beaches of Ft. Myers and the Barrier islands (Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, North Captiva Island, Cayo Costa Island, and Boca Grande Island). These fish travel south to north and disperse throughout the estuaries of Pine Island Sound and up through Charlotte Harbor. As the months go on, these fish will pour into our passes such as Captiva Pass and Boca Grande Pass.

We apply a mixture of tactics to capture these fish accordingly. On the flats, tarpon can be found in 2-10 ft of water, laid up in potholes, floating like silvery logs. Anchored up, dead-baiting is our strategy here, predominately using fresh cut bait. With such shallow water depths, the tarpon have no where to go but out and up, creating a very thrilling fight with lots of leaps! Get ready to BOW to the Silver King!! Nearshore the barrier island beaches and throughout the passes and harbor, drifting and pitching live bait, such as threadfins, pinfish, and crabs, is the name of the game. Here, the ‘rolling’ schools of tarpon can be very visual, frolicking and feeding on the water’s surface. Keep your eye out for free-jumpers!

Tarpon will start showing up anywhere from mid March to April depending on cold fronts. This is the time when thousands of fish make their way from the south as they come up to the spawning grounds, taking place mid-May and June, both on new and full moons and during the hill-tides. At these times, these fish can be caught on out-going tide with live bait. Most people don’t realize but some of our best tarpon fishing is actually July, August, September and even October in Pine Island and off the beaches. This gives the avid tarpon angler or family alike almost an 8 month window to book a trip of a lifetime.
