Fishin’ Report: Southwest Florida
Tenacity’s Guide Service * Capt. Bo Johnson * March 1st 2012 * Pine Island Sound
With a very mild winter upon us, the water temperatures are rising everyday and pushing all species to an early appearance.
The redfish are schooling up pretty tight right now. High tides are making for some great bush fishing.
The trout bite has been on fire! They are avidly eating the 4″ Al Gag whip-it-eel lure. Hot colors have been New penny and Pearl white strung on a Chartreuse 1/4 oz jig head. You’ll get the best bite on drop offs in 3 to 5 foot of water…and some of ur bigger fish up to 28 inches coming off the shallower grass flats 1 to 3 feet deep.
Quite a few pompano are eating Al Gag’s pearl white 4” whip-it-eel. Hook-ups while trout fishing are common.
Last year we were consistently catching tarpon by the second week of March. This year is shaping up to be the same. Cut bait is our choice for this time of year. Your tarpon can be found in troughs and sloughs. We are seeing some free jumpers and also some laid up fish in the normal places, its just a matter of time with waters approaching the magical temperature that we will be flying the mighty Silver King!
And how can we forget the coolest fish in the gulf….SHARKS! They are HERE and we like it. Right now, Bulls and monster Black tips are the norm, and soon the Sand tigers and Lemons will be added to the game. And if ya are up for a real challenge, the giant HAMMERHEADS will be ready to play very soon. There is nothing like the two top predators on land and sea colliding for an epic battle of wits and gear. Our new custom rigs by Sewell Rods and Canyon Reels make for a top-notch battle. A picture of a lifetime awaits!
